Reiki is a system of hands-on energy healing formalized in early 1900's Japan by Mikao Usui who drew inspiration from Daoism and Tendai Buddhism. Ki (or Qi in Chinese) may be understood as the body's electromagnetic field, influenced in acupuncture by needling surface meridians. Acupuncture points are known to have a lower resistance to electrical conductivity than surrounding tissues, and are thought to be organizing centers in key areas of the field. Reiki influences that field by a much more subtle means. Rei (or Ling in Chinese) is translated as spiritual, numinous, transcendent, or efficacious. It suggests the ability to invoke change through spiritual work...meditative practices that improve the flow of Qi and enable students of Reiki to similarly assist others through key areas on the body.
